Accused Colorado mass murderer Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa will remain held without bond — and face additional charges in the coming weeks, prosecutors said Thursday.
Alissa, 21, appeared in person in Colorado district court, sitting in a wheelchair and wearing navy jail scrubs and a white face mask for the brief procedural hearing.
Prosecutors said they would be filing “additional charges” within the next couple of weeks but did not elaborate.
Alissa is currently charged with 11 counts — including 10 counts of first-degree murder in Monday’s slaughter at the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder.
Lawyers for Alissi, meanwhile, asked that the prosecutors turn over discovery in the case and requested a three-month delay so that they can begin assessing “Mr. Alissa’s mental illness.”
“We cannot begin to assess the needs and depth of Mr. Alissa’s mental illness until we have the discovery from the government,” said defense attorney Kathryn Herold. “It’s my understanding that the government is continuing to investigate this case. The discovery is going to be voluminous.”
Prosecutors requested less time, but said the crime scene was still being processed and that they hadn’t received evidence yet from police.
During Thursday’s hearing, which was streamed online and lasted all of five minutes, Judge Thomas Mulvahill advised Alissa of his rights before ordering him held without bail until his next hearing.
“Sir, do you understand those rights as I’ve explained them to you this morning? I need you to answer out loud, please,” Mulvahill said.
“Yes,” Alissa said quietly — the only time he spoke in court.
Alissa, who was off-screen in the livestream, did not enter a plea during the hearing.
He waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days to allow time for a mental health assessment.
Authorities have previously said they are still working on pinpointing a motive for the shooting.
The victims were identified as: Denny Stong, 20; Neven Stanisic, 23; Rikki Olds, 25; Tralona Bartkowiak, 49; Suzanne Fountain, 59; Teri Leiker, 51; Eric Talley, 51; Kevin Mahoney, 61; Lynn Murray, 62, and Jody Waters, 65.
Alissa’s next court date has not yet been set.
